The Arlington Professional Firefighters recently "Adopted" a two-mile section of Dutchess Turnpike, or Route 44, in the Town of Poughkeepsie, from Adams Fairacre Farms to Friendly Honda.

The New York State Department of Transportation's Adopt a Highway Program, encourages organizations and individuals in some cases, to "adopt" sections of New York's highways in an attempt to beautify them, and their communities.

"We saw the opening for Dutchess Turnpike in the program, and the members were eager to sign up and get involved" said Firefighter Erin Hanlon, chairman of the program for the APFFA. "It's amazing how much stuff gets thrown out of people's cars.. it's unfortunate that it happens, but we're happy to do a small part to help make our community a nicer place to live." he said.

The firefighters will be walking the route about four times a year.
